3. How To Follow A Witch

shadows-at-dawnHi I’m Lucy – welcome to Witch-Watch. If this is your first visit it might be more fun for you to go to the very start of Witch-Watch so you can find out what’s been going on up to now!

There have been lots of rumours flying around that there just might just be a witch in Ballyyahoo, so I’ve been trying to find out if that’s true. The major suspect is a woman called Biddy.

I hope that if Biddy is a real witch, she turns out to be a friendly witch, not a wicked one! I want to learn how to do spells and magic!

A HAMMER AND A NAIL

To see if someone is a witch you have to hammer a nail into their shadow. If they start limping they are! I think it’s a great idea because shadows are with you whether you like it or not. Have you ever tried to hide from your own shadow?

I was worried that Biddy would catch me sneaking along behind her but I was in luck because I was able to follow her loads of times without her even noticing.

She doesn’t walk very fast so I was able to trail along behind her, pretending to pick berries. By the way, pretending to pick berries is a great cover if you ever have to follow someone.

A SECRET MISSION

I had a great time following Biddy. I felt like I was on a special mission and it made me decide that when I grow up I’m going to be a detective and not just any old detective, I want to be a special detective with magic spells.

I was really lucky Biddy didn’t get the bus. I didn’t have any money for the fare. I’ve spent all my pocket money and all my savings on a book called Private Detectiving For Complete Eejits and I bought a really cool spiral bound notebook to write down my evidence.

One day Biddy went down to the mobile library and she took out a book called Walk And Get Really Skinny. She must have read it because she never seemed to stop walking after that. She was up and down the lanes, in and out of the tracks and trails and all over the beach.

What I did think was a bit strange was that she always walked with her head down, like she was looking for something. Maybe lizards, or toads, or even some frogs to put in a witches brew.

There’s lots of frogs around Ballyyahoo. They hide under rocks and stones and sometimes if we leave our window open they even come in our house.

Another thing I noticed was that every time I followed her I felt like someone was watching me. Usually it was just the cows. The cows in Ballyyahoo watch everything all the time. In fact, the cows in Ballyyahoo are probably the nosiest cows in Ireland. Look at this lot and see what I mean!

One night Biddy went down to the pub. Now, I couldn’t follow her in there – mum would have killed me after she’d finished murdering me so I had to wait outside.

Biddy wasn’t too long though and when she came out she had a large bag of dry roasted nuts – my favourite kind. She ate them all the way home. I was dying for one but had to keep out of sight.

ACKYWACKYDACKY BEANS

I got really good at keeping out of sight and luckily for me there are loads of overgrown hedges in Ballyyahoo so you can sink into them to hide.

Mostly, Biddy only went to Kelly’s. That’s the shop and the petrol station in Ballyyahoo. I was behind her in Kelly’s yesterday. She had a big long list written on the back of an electric bill.

Biddy didn’t get everything on the list because Kelly’s didn’t have any ackywackydacky beans. Seanie Kelly said they’d never heard of such a bean in Ballyyahoo but that he would do his best and try to order them in and that he might have them for her next time the van came across the mountains which might be next time there’s a full moon on a Monday.

Biddy didn’t buy anything suspicious, just this little lot – pretty ordinary really!

  • 1 loaf of batch bread.
  • 2 litres of low-fat milk.
  • 1 tub of low-fat spread.
  • 1  pot of Rhubarb jam.
  • 2 tins of sardines in tomato sauce.
  • 2  tins of baked beans in tomato sauce.
  • 2 tins of mackerel in tomato sauce.
  • 5 large bottles of tomato sauce.
  • 7 family size ‘Scoff’ bars.
  • 1 large packet of minced hearts.

Except for minced hearts!!!!! That’s suspiciously witchy!  Why is Biddy buying minced hearts? Maybe she was going to mix up minced hearts with tomato sauce and make a big gory looking witches stew!  I couldn’t wait to get home and put that in my notebook.

So, that’s all the evidence I’ve got so far. I haven’t managed to hammer a nail into her shadow at all yet because Biddy was moving too much. I need her to keep very still so I can sneak up with the hammer and nail. I don’t know if can do it but I will keep trying and let you know how I get on very soon!

Wish me luck! Back soon.
