Creative Writing for Children

Sketch of girl writing in notebook Hand drawn vector illustration - on an educational post about creative writing for children

Creative writing is fun for everyone, but children have an extraordinary imagination.

If children are encouraged, this can lead to wonderful stories.

To help your child get started first ensure they have a specially designated notebook to keep their stories together.

Begin by asking your child the following questions:

Where do you want your story to be?

It could be in the woods. Click here to see the Ballyyahoo Woods for ideas and pictures.

In their school

In the garden.

On the beach. Click here for the Ballyyahoo beach.

Or, even on another planet!

Help your child with a few suggestions then ask them to think of a few places themselves.

Who is going to be in your story?

Your family, friends, fairies, animals, aliens from outer space,  people you make up?

When do you want your story to happen?

In the future, the past or right now.

What is going to happen in your story?

Think of the most amazing things that can happen.

Once your child has chosen a place, some characters and a time for the story to take place, they can begin to decide what is going to happen.

You can help by making suggestions – for example:

The space ship crashed on the beach, and lots of little aliens came running out.

They were lost and scared and hid behind some rocks.

John saw them and wondered if they could talk.

He wanted to talk to them, but he was scared too.

Once you get to that stage with a child and their story, they will probably begin to think of lots more things that can happen in their story.

Remember that asking W questions leads to answers and answers form the story.

What

When

Where

Why

I hope this helped your child create a story and if it did – please like and share.
