Beach combing is easy to do when you live in Ballyyahoo.
Ballyyahooians only have to walk down this lane to arrive a lovely little rocky beach.
The rocky beach is called Biddy’s beach because it’s quite close to a house belonging to a woman called Biddy.
If you are wondering who Biddy is then you might be interested to know that she is quite an ordinary Ballyyahooian, except for one thing: Biddy is actually a witch – The Witch of Ballyyahoo.
If you would like to visit Biddy’s beach then just click here.
The other beach in Ballyyahoo is a beautiful sandy beach called the Halfamoon beach and to see that you can click here.
Both beaches are small but because there are not too many people living in Ballyyahoo, that’s okay.
BEACH COMBING
If you like beach combing, the best time to go is at low tide, so you can see everything that would normally be covered in water.
There is so much you can find on the beach.
If you like shells and stones you will find lots and each one is unique.
If you don’t believe this – next time you go to a beach, try and find two stones exactly the same.
There are some very strange stones in Ballyyahoo like this one. Nobody can decide exactly what this stone looks like.
Some say it looks like an elephant, others say it doesn’t look a bit like an elephant, that it looks like an old bone, while others say it looks like nothing at all, just a lump of stone.
You have to be careful when you are out beach combing because there are all sorts of living creatures that make their home on the beach.
If you look around the rocks where little pools form, you may see some crabs like this pink one here.
It is better not to disturb any little creatures you come across as they are easily hurt or harmed.
If you look around, you might realize that you are not the only one beach combing. Birds often scour the beaches looking for food.
Sometimes you will see rubbish on the beach.
This doesn’t just look messy it’s also dangerous to the little creatures and birds that live there.
Birds can get caught up in plastic bags and other plastic items.
Sadly they can die – if nobody comes along to untangle them.
It’s lovely to have a picnic on the beach and it’s lovely to go beach combing too, but whenever you do – always make sure you take your rubbish home with you.
