ONLINE STORIES FOR KIDS – INTRODUCING WITCH-WATCH
Hi I’m Lucy and I live in Ballyyahoo – if you have never heard of Ballyyahoo then before you read my stories you need to know that it is a very special, secret and magical little town on the west coast of Ireland. You can learn more about Ballyyahoo here.
RUMOURS OF A WITCH
There have been rumours of a witch in Ballyyahoo for longer than I can remember and most of them were started by a local woman called Maggie-many-cats.
But my mum always says these witchy stories are nothing more than daft tales that Maggie makes up to amuse herself, when her many, many cats have gone to sleep and she’s run out of soaps to watch on the telly.
She also says that boredom is a curse and that that too many Ballyyahooians are cursed with it. Mum thinks we should all find something better to do than spread silly stories and daft rumours.
NO PROOF?
Mum also says there’s not one drop of proof to say that there is a witch in Ballyyahoo. But, you know, when you think about it, she is a mum and mums are pretty much the same everywhere.
They don’t like kids hearing scary stuff and so she would say that – wouldn’t she? She says I should be learning more about nature and not worrying myself with witches and the like.
Now, I do love nature, especially the nature in Ballyyahoo, but sometimes when I am out walking I see things, very strange things and some of them are stranger than fiction…
LIZARDS TAILS AND CAULDRONS
One time, Maggie’s cat brought home a lizard. Now that’s a surprising thing to happen because not only are lizards very rare in Ballyyahoo, but they are very rare in Ireland too.
What was even more surprising was that this lizard had absolutely no tail.
Maggie said that this had to be the work of a witch, not a nice one either but a really wicked witch and that without one single solitary doubt there has to be a witch on the loose in Ballyyahoo because only a witch could find a use for a lizards tail – probably something to do with cauldrons and evil potions.
STRANGE THINGS
Talking about cauldrons – I don’t know what you think but I think this looks suspiciously like a cauldron – a witch’s cauldron! I found it sitting on a mossy stone and hidden in the long grass of a rocky meadow. Bit of a suspicious looking coincidence isn’t it?
It couldn’t have just got there could it? Someone must have placed it on top of the mossy stone – but who? And why?
I must admit I like the idea of a witch in Ballyyahoo. All witches can’t be scary, can they? If there was a wicked witch in Ballyyahoo we’d all have been turned into frogs by now surely?
CONDEMNED TO ETERNAL FROGDOM
And that’s another coincidence. I found this frog in my bath last week. My mother said it must have jumped in my window but I wonder about that. I mean what if it wasn’t really a frog?
WHAT IF?
What if it’s really a person that fell out with a witch and is now doomed to live in eternal frogdom…
To be honest I think my mum is right about the frog, but I’m still not sure she’s right about the witch.
If there is a witch then she’s a good one because nothing bad ever happens in Ballyyahoo. Nothing really bad. So what I’m hoping is that if I find the Witch of Ballyyahoo she just might teach me some magic.
If I could cast spells I would make a special spell that makes my homework get done double fast so I could have more time outside.
Mind you, I have to have proof – like a good detective. I don’t want to believe the stories just because I like them.
A MAGIC DETECTIVE
I love detective stories and I’d love to be a detective when I grow up. I think it would really help to have a little bit of magic as well.
So I’ve decided to try and find out if there really is a witch in Ballyyahoo by carrying out my own investigations.
I’m going to write all about it, so if you want to read all about my witch-watching adventures – you can start now!
Love from Lucy
