How our little dog, Eppie, learned to swim.

cover of Maggie Many Cats by Grace Jolliffe illustrating a children's storyEppie is our little terrier dog. She is now about three years old and we have had her since she was just a couple of months old.

She comes everywhere with me, sleeps on our bed and even sits beside me when I am writing my Ballyyahoo stories.

Actually, she sits beside me when I am writing all my stories – she rarely leaves my side.

HER ROYAL EPPIE-NESS

Eppie makes the occasional appearance here on the site and she’s such a little Princess we sometimes call her – Her Royal Eppie-ness

Eppie is a great little swimmer and I remember the first time I decided to take her for a swim.

This was a couple of years ago when she was about a year old. At the time our other dog, Sheba, was alive. Sadly, she died a couple of years after Eppie’s first swim.

Sheba loved to swim but I wasn’t sure if Eppie could swim since this was the first time we’d taken her.

I really didn’t know what would happen when we got down to the water but I was in for a big surprise.

The minute Sheba got in for a swim Eppie ran straight in after her.

Soon they were swimming along together and you’d never believe it was Eppie’s first time in the water.

Eppie is so tiny that she was out of her depth even in the shallow water.

But that didn’t stop Eppie.

She had to swim really fast to keep up with Sheba.

But, she’s such a determined little dog she kept up.

In fact, Eppie always makes sure she never gets left behind.

Here she is below, just as she came running out of the water.

Eppie was so excited that she couldn’t wait to get back to me.

Of course, she did what all dogs do and shook herself dry all over my clean clothes.

Just when Eppie finished soaking me, Sheba ran over and did exactly the same thing.

I was very wet but I didn’t mind because it had been great fun watching them.

ActuallY, it was one of those days when you don’t mind anything at all.

Best wishes

Grace
