My Dogs and Ballyahoo

cover of Maggie Many Cats by Grace Jolliffe illustrating a children's story Hi, my name is Grace Jolliffe and I write all the Ballyyahoo stories and take all the nature photographs on you see here on the Ballyyahoo website.

I also write the Ballyyahoo books series like the one you see here on the right.

Sheba and Eppie are my two very special dogs. I got Sheba about two years ago from a rescue kennel here in Galway.

The kennel is where dogs often end up when they have been abandoned or lost, or when their owners can’t care for them any more.

Sheba is eight years old and is a German Shepherd.

She used to live with a family in Dublin and was very sad when they sent her away to the kennels.

There is no way to explain to a dog why a family they have been with for eight years suddenly can’t keep her any more.

Sheba cried for weeks in the kennels and when she first came to live with us she was very watchful and scared.

She is still a very quiet dog but much happier now she has Eppie to play with.

Eppie came last February and is a puppy of seven months old. She is also a rescued dog and was found living in very poor circumstances, neglected and starved.

Luckily, she responded very well to our care and it didn’t take long for her to become healthy and lively.

She doesn’t like the cold weather and tends to shiver a bit.

She has a very short coat, unlike Sheba, whose coat is very thick and warm.

I always put a little coat on her when I take her out on a cold day as you can see from the picture below.

Eppie is a very lively puppy and loves playing outside with Sheba.

They chase each other around the field for hours until they are exhausted. Then they collapse into a heap and fall into a very deep sleep.

SNIFFING PLACES

Both dogs love to walk around ‘Ballyyahoo’ with me and they both have their favourite sniffing places.

DOGS

I thought it would be fun to place the two dogs illustrating a chlldren's story about dogs from Ireland's Ballyyahoodogs in my Ballyyahoo stories occasionally.

As you can see from the pictures the two dogs make a bit of an odd couple size wise, but they get on like a house on fire.

I love animals of every variety and writing the Ballyyahoo stories means I get the opportunity to be able to write about them and have fun with them – whenever I want.

Best wishes

Grace

UPDATE

Sadly, Sheba died last Easter after a short illness. We were very sad when this happened and will always miss her.

We console ourselves with the knowledge that one day we all must go, so that others may take our place.

We still have our lovely little Eppie and you can read more about her here.

We will never forget our beloved Sheba. Below is a portrait we had done so we can always see and remember our beautiful friend.colour portrait of a German Shepherd illustrating a page from a children's stories website.SHEBA Rest in Peace
