GREYSTONES KITTY HOSTEL
My daughter, Louise Cardiff, her team of volunteers, run a TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) charity called Greystones Kitty Hostel.
This small but dedicated team help, rescue and neuter Ireland’s growing number of distressed, abandoned and feral cats.
Maggie-many-cats is one of the characters from my series of stories about the magical town of Ballyyahoo on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.
As you might have guessed – Maggie-many-cats home is not filled with dogs. She is known in Ballyyahoo as being a die-hard cat lover – in fact her house is filled with them. She even has a cat-orchestra, so naturally, Maggie was the ideal character to use in a story that’s both for cats and about cats.
The problem of abandoned cats has been getting worse since Ireland’s recession. Unfortunately, more people have been dumping their unneutered cats.
OUT OF CONTROL
With cats having several litters per year the numbers have quickly gone out of control. TNR is vital in controlling these numbers. The process of TNR isn’t easy. Each cats have to be trapped and taken to the vet for the neutering procedure. Following this they are collected from the surgery and they must be cared for until they recover enough to be returned to where they came from.
After they are freed the cats are fed and monitored into the future to safeguard their health and welfare. Costs include vet’s fees, food, medication and shelter. Funds have to be raised to meet the costs involved.
It isn’t easy to raise funds for animals in recession Ireland so I came up with the idea of writing Maggie-Many-Cats And The Cat That Flew In The Window as a way of raising funds.
Cat lovers have told me they love this story and although the Ballyyahoo series is for children I have written Maggie-Many-Cats And The Cat That Flew In The Window so that all the family can share and enjoy the story.
All profits from the sale of the book are going towards paying vet fees and other ongoing costs involved with the care of the cats.
The volunteers involved in TNR are an extremely dedicated and hardworking group of people. Fundraising is one of their biggest problems. They raise funds in various ways such as auctions, sponsored walks, craft and bakery sales etc.
CAN’T KNIT – CAN’T SEW
I wanted to help but since I am not very good at baking or handicrafts I decided to do what I could do. So I wrote a story. This is what the story is about:
MAGGIE-MANY-CATS AND THE CAT THAT FLEW IN THE WINDOW.
This is a very funny story about a crazy-cat-lady who lives in the magical town of Ballyyahoo in Ireland. Maggie-many-cats has so many cats that she lost count of them many years ago.
A STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL CAT
One day, Maggie finds a strange and beautiful cat in her garden. Maggie thinks it’s just another lost cat because her house is like a lost cat magnet but this cat is not lost.
This cat is a very special cat who knows exactly what she wants and exactly where to find it. When Maggie learns just what this cat can do she thinks she’s going mad.
CAT’S CAN’T FLY
Everyone knows cats can’t fly but then Catleesha’s not an ordinary cat and soon Maggie begins to learn one of the many secrets of Ballyyahoo.
