A FUNNY, FAMILY STORY FROM THE WEST COAST OF IRELAND. WRITTEN BY AWARD WINNING WRITER, GRACE JOLLIFFE

Bonkers in Ballyyahoo is a very funny children’s story that was initially broadcast on Ireland’s RTE 1. It has now been adapted as part of a series of short stories for children. The stories are set in Ireland’s secret town, Ballyyahoo, a magical place that hides between the mountains and the sea, somewhere between County Galway and County Clare.

The only people who know exactly where Ballyyahoo is are the people who live there. They are a very lively bunch and there’s always lots of craic in Ballyyahoo but they are a bit shy with strangers, so they buried all the signposts somewhere in the bog of Ballyyahoo and then forgot all about them!

There are only about fifty people living in Ballyyahoo so there isn’t a whole lot there but there is a petrol station/shop, a pub, a church, a rusty old post-box, a few farms, loads and loads of horses, cows, sheep, donkeys, and other animals, lots of kids including two very bored boys.

BORED BEING BORED

cartoon-boy-on-gateThe two bored boys are called Gerry Mac and Kevin. They are cousins and their mums are two sisters. Gerry Mac and Kevin are so bored, they get bored being bored. Gerry doesn’t really mind being bored because he passes his time by swinging on his gate. This drives his mother bonkers and she wants him to go and be active, have hobbies and interests like the other kids in Ballyyahoo but Gerry’s too bored to move. Besides Gerry thinks nothing could be more fun than swinging on a gate?

Kevin is bored as well but unlike Gerry he’s got plenty of things to do. Trouble is, the only thing Kevin likes to do is drive the whole town bonkers! You see if Kevin’s not being bad he get bored and being bored drives Kevin bonkers so as you can imagine, Kevin likes to be bad quite a lot.

BADDER THAN BAD

Kevin used to do ordinary bad things, like the time he let a whole army of spiders loose in the local pub and another time he put cockroaches on the bread counter in the shop.

But not any more, Kevin’s mum got him a computer – big mistake. Kevin’s ideas have got bigger and badder and if you read this story you’ll find out just how bad Kevin can be.

Bonkers In Ballyyahoo is one of a series of original children’s stories from award winning writer, Grace Jolliffe. This story was originally broadcast on RTE Radio One. This makes the story great fun as well as easy to read aloud.
